My work explores the relationship between environments created by man and those that exist in the natural world. Both are functional, purpose-built and influenced by their surroundings. Both contain striking similarities on a micro and macro level, and yet the man-made and the natural are often portrayed as in perpetual conflict. The details and the common themes present within even the simplest manmade and natural structures fascinate me, and it is these details and similarities which I contemplate in my work. Using grid stencils, I superimpose renderings of man-made spaces on natural settings creating hybrids that evoke both the polarization and unity of our two worlds. The tonal inversion of the natural and man-made images draws from photography to challenge traditional perception of the natural environment as backdrop to the man-made. I attempt to capture the natural environment in the positive image while using negative space to represent the artificial or man-made environment; a quiet irony given the precision of the spatial voids themselves. I use a labor-intensive process that involves creating organic figures from multiple series of fine cross hatches and codes. My work contemplates both the urban and the pastoral, the structured and the chaotic, the spaces where man and nature coexist and collide, and the ways in which each influence one another.
