My work is an on-going experiment, as evident in the photo sketches here and in many site-specific installations over the last few years.
I'm looking always for ways to combine and integrate compelling images, marks, and notations with collected ephemera, papers, and writings into something new and fresh and whole.
The photographs on this page exemplify this process and search. Each is an assemblage of materials from a range of sources and time periods, both personal and historical, that incorporate and appropriate from the past to create original statements from a contemporary point-of-view.
Each piece is also an attempt to come one step closer to the answering questions that drive this search: What does endure? And how do we carry the past forward into work that becomes and remains distinctly our own?
Susan Alport is a mixed-media artist who works and lives in Brookline, MA. Her works appropriate and transform imagery, text, and notations to create visual statements about beauty and art, the primacy of the individual, and connections between temporal existence and definitions of beauty. Alport is a graduate of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and has an MA from Boston University and a BA from Russell Sage College in English Language and Literature. She has taught mixed-media art to children at the New Art Center in Newton, MA and has taught English to English Language Learners and native speakers in area urban and suburban school systems. Alport has exhibited her works widely throughout the US and her works are held in private collections in Greater Boston and New York.
