Review: McQuaid, Cate, "What the light reveals in a new exhibit at Kingston Gallery." The Boston Globe, Art, December 22, 2016

Drawn to Light features a fascinating range of Cree Bruins' most recent work, including archival inkjet prints, titled Follow the Leader, large-scale wall installations, and drawings. The film used to make analog images consistently serves as both Bruins' muse and her medium. While photography is a major source of inspiration for Bruins, it is not representational depictions that obsess her. She builds a formal vocabulary with geometry and accentuated by color. Unexpected abstract shapes and colors found on scraps of film are not typically the focus of photographers, but Bruins sorts, edits, and arranges them so these accidents, all found from separate rolls, eventually seem to have come about for a reason, some resembling a series of horizon lines viewed from the window of a moving vehicle at sunset.
