Elbow Room is a solo exhibition by artist member Jennifer Moses. Her new series of abstract paintings and large-scale collages feature vivid colors, weathered layers, and beguiling shapes. The works highlight the artist's many influences, which include art history, mid-century modernism, comics, and puzzles. Moses brings a sense of levity to abstract works that are often considered in a more serious vein.
The paintings and collages tease viewers' curiosity, initially with their design, and later with their content. Colors evolve improvisationally, forming complex relationships, resulting in paintings and collages that are both visceral and humorous. The works speak and refer to each other across her studio walls; the collages meandering outward, and the paintings with more densely packed compositions.
