Observation, memory, and imagination are at the heart of Drawings, a new series of works on paper from guest artist Brian Littlefield. With charcoal, and occasionally an oil bar, Littlefield marks his large paper drawings without a predetermined image in mind. Littlefield's richly worked surfaces are the result of a naturally evolving process where he begins each piece with structural ideas, but then lets the work take form through a continuing response to the image as it develops. For Littlefield, working with charcoal fosters a direct approach to creating his work. The material is equally malleable and stubborn, delicate and inelegant, definite and imprecise. Charcoal's distinctive marks and smudges give integrity to the artist's observation of small things.
