What we observe through marks in the terrain mark our own temporal boundaries through our lifetimes. In the light of the recent hurricane and many global catastrophic weather occurrences, I am particularly aware of global warming and the melting of our glaciers. From the mountains flow the rivers that bring life to the world. Will the melting of our ice fields reform the landscape into new modes of connections, or will this slow destruction and deterioration overcome us, terminating civilization, as we know it? Meltwater is an attempt to dwell in the beauty of our natural resources and at the same time, become palpably aware of its demise.

Gail Erwin explores nature and landscape, looking at its mystery and allure; its patterns, rhythms and harmony. Time, age and memory are reflected in image and process. Erwin combines twenty first century digital technology and 19th century photographic techniques, creating new, unpredictable images, and transforming the original digital photograph.
Arcadian images of an idealized or sublime bucolic landscape enfold and envelop the viewer. There is a sense of longing, a sense of being hidden amongst the trees. Of finding as aerie or sanctuary in the foliage.
"My intension is not to depict nature but to create images that reflect what it leaves me with--the sensations and memories.", said Erwin.

Linda Leslie Brown's sculpture and installations reimagine intersections of humans with nature. The work is biased toward process: growth, change, and falling apart. This installation, "Chimeric" signals transformation and interdependence as symbiotic modes of being joined with nature- in a world where many people imagine they are separate from it. The sculptures are literally alive, as habitats for growing plants rooted and clinging to their surfaces. Umbilical swags of Spanish moss connect the works in the installation to one another, to their smaller "young" and to the space they inhabit. These works display a deceptive insouciance, undercut by the strange hybridity they embody. They are chimeric: like mythological beasts or genetically engineered mutations, they are "trans" beings.

The first in a series of events sponsored by Kingston Gallery focuses on the theme of visual artists who, like Ilona Anderson, are not working in their country of origin, and how that fact pervades the life and work of the artist. To quote Anderson, "Although I have lived in America for many years now, South Africa permeates my experience. Between these two poles my work dangles." This will be a fascinating topic in light of the recent events and national debate around immigration.

For the first show of 2013 the Kingston Gallery is proud to present the senior students from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design's Fibers Program. The exhibit will consist of a broad perspective of contemporary work. Each of these artists has been developing their own voice in this distinctive medium.
The work spans the genre of the fiber arts including weaving, surface design and papermaking. Some students use these techniques to express their interpretation of societal and personal themes; the work is forceful. Others are interested in the subtleties found in the processes themselves.

Rebirth 1, Olivia Frassinelli.
