Artist Statement
I have recently been focused on the idea of repeating gestures like folding, twisting, stretching and dropping through the practice of creating repeating forms in different scales that all encompass a similar gesture or directionality. I connect them in order to create a larger version, which amplifies the initial gesture. The directionality of the work is often twisted, torqued and inverted in ways that explore the idea of being disrupted and pulled apart and also coming together within a form. These forms are metaphors for mortality and also explore how ideas emerge from within.
Clay has natural inclinations as a material. I explore the shapes it can be transformed into and allow myself to notice when a gesture within the material seems complete. I am interested in the balance between conscious forming and allowing for intuition to take the lead and so that form can reveal itself. Through this process visual tension becomes evident in the form, surface and gesture of the work.
This work has organic qualities that reference the body, archeology, and architectural structures such as arches or bridges. Cracks, rupture, ooze and the way that material splits visually articulate the idea of shifting history.
