Susan Greer Emmerson (In Memoriam)

Hiraeth 1, 2020 (Gouache, ink and charcoal on paper)

With great sadness, we announce that Kingston Gallery member Susan Greer Emmerson passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully, in her Dorchester home last Thursday. The shockwaves of the immense loss have hit the Boston art community hard and we at Kingston Gallery have been collectively mourning the loss of one of our friends. Susan was a woman of many talents, a skilled ENT surgeon who transformed her life to pursue a career as an artist. Her open and generous heart matched her tenacity to achieve her dreams. Not only was Susan a forward-thinking artist but also a mentor and role model to emerging artists, supporting their practice in countless ways. Her dedication to Kingston Gallery was unparalleled, and she would do the jobs of three people at times, despite having health problems. Nothing slowed her; she would march forward into new opportunities with gusto.

Susan first joined the Kingston Gallery community as an Associate Member in 2014, becoming a full gallery member in 2016. During her tenure, she produced five shows on topics ranging from the concepts of home to climate change. Her most recent show in the Project Space Gallery in May 2022, ‘The Last Thing They Wore’ was a poignant tribute to victims of the Covid-19 pandemic, drawn from obituaries in the pages of the New York Times. The subject was a testament to her generous spirit. The execution of the exhibition showed her artistic genius for portraying each victim's humanity and importance.

Susan leaves behind two beloved sons, a sister, and an extended family who were her pride and joy, along with her two cats and a snake. She leaves behind a whole community of those who loved her and that will deeply miss her dauntlessly warm spirit and timely artwork delving into home and belonging.

Rest in Peace and Power, Susan Greer Emmerson.
